2. Safety instructions
The microphone has the intended purpose of con-
verting acoustic signals into electrical signals.
Connect the microphone only to microphone in-
puts and devices which supply 48 V of phantom
power in accordance with IEC 61938.
Repairs and servicing are to be carried out only
by experienced, authorized service personnel.
Unauthorized opening or modification of the
equipment shall void the warranty.
Use the equipment only under the conditions
specified in the β€œTechnical data” section. Allow
the equipment to adjust to the ambient tempera-
ture before switching it on. Do not operate the
equipment if it has been damaged during trans-
port.
Always run cables in such a way that there is no
risk of tripping over them.
Unless required for operation, ensure that liquids
and electrically conductive objects are kept at a
safe distance from the equipment and its connec-
tions.

3. Brief description
The TLM 50 is a condenser studio microphone
with transformerless (TLM) circuit technology.
The microphone operates as a pressure trans-
ducer, with an omnidirectional directional char-
acteristic.
Key features include exceptionally clean sound
transmission which is free of coloration, with ex-
tremely low self-noise and an extensive dynamic
range.
The diaphragm of the TLM 50 is mounted flush
with the surface of a plastic sphere. Due to the
favorable pressure build-up and deflection char-
acteristics of the sphere, the change of frequency
response relative to the angle of incidence of the
sound is significantly smoother than is the case
with cylindrical capsules.
The directivity also exhibits an exceptionally lin-
ear increase as the frequency increases.
The microphone has a titanium diaphragm, which
exhibits an extremely fast transient response due
to its small mass.
A switchable high-pass filter increases the lower
cuto frequency from 30 Hz to 100 Hz.
The pre-attenuation switch reduces the micro-
phone sensitivity by 10 dB, thus allowing the pro-
cessing of very high sound pressure levels.
Typical applications of the TLM 50 include use in
orchestral recording as a main pair in AB technol-
ogy. In surround recording, it is usually used in
Decca tree formation for larger ensembles.

7. Troubleshooting
Problem
β–Ά
Possible causes
β–Ά
Solution
Microphone
not operating
The phantom power supply voltage is not
switched on at the mixing console or at the
power supply equipment.
Check the corresponding channel settings.
The power supply equipment is not con-
nected to the power supply line or there is
no battery.
Check the connection to the power supply
line or check the battery of the power supply
equipment.
No signal
transmission
The microphone is not connected to the
correct microphone amplifier input of the
subsequent equipment.
Check the signal path.
If necessary, activate the appropriate input
on the corresponding channel of the mixing
console.
