1. PRESENTATION
The CA895 detector measures the level of carbon monoxide present in
the surrounding atmosphere from 0 to 1,000 ppm.
For this purpose it uses a catalytic chemical sensor which does not
consume any chemical substance.
This portable instrument is particularly suitable for detecting the levels of
CO potentially dangerous for human beings in heating, refrigeration,
ventilation/air-conditioning installations and, in general, in industrial,
commercial or residential environments where combustion gas may
accumulate.
The most usual utilisation is to locate the source giving off the CO,
facilitated by the presence of a buzzer, the frequency of which increases
with the concentration of CO.
Above a level of 200 ppm, the buzzer makes a continuous sound
The CA895 detector is a small portable instrument that can be operated
with one hand only, equipped with a backlit, 2000-point LCD screen. It is
an integral part of the new Physics Line range of physical measuring
instruments.
2. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
2.1 Important safety information
Before using the instrument, it is vital to know the scale of CO danger-
levels and how they affect the health of human beings.
CO is a colourless, odourless gas which, in certain concentrations, may
be life-threatening to man:
From 0 to 1 ppm normal level of CO in the air
9 ppm maximum acceptable level in a room without
a detrimental effect on health
50 ppm maximum bearable level for continuous
exposure for 8 hours
200 ppm mild headache, nausea and dizziness
400 ppm serious headache, life-threatening after 3
hours’ exposure
800 ppm death after 2 hours’ exposure
1600 ppm nausea in 20 minutes, death within an hour
12800 ppm death within 1 to 3 minutes of exposure
2.2 Detection of a dangerous gas-burning appliance
In absolute terms, a CO detector cannot determine whether or not a
gas-burning appliance is faulty (in the CO emission sense);
It can only give a reliable result if the following conditions occur
simultaneously:
• the flame generates a sufficient quantity of CO due to a lack of
oxygen in the flame or to excess fuel (non-stichiometric combustion)
• a sufficient quantity of combustion gas is given off by the gas-
burning appliance.
