OWNERâS MANUAL
Thank you for choosing Marshall and congratulations on the purchase of your British
made, all-valve, 30 Watt Astoria Classic AST1C combo or AST1H head. Our goal with
the Astoria Classic was simple: create a single channel ampliîer with the purity of
hand wired clean valve sound, classic tonal function and contemporary switching.
We sincerely hope that your Astoria Classic will provide you with countless hours of
tone.
- The Marshall Team
Your Astoria Classic has been expertly
crafted and is designed, engineered and
constructed to the highest possible
standards at the Marshall factory in
Bletchley, England. Its all-valve heart
comprises of: 3 x ECC83 (12AX7) in the
preamp, a GZ34 rectiîer, and 2 x KT66
in the output stage, which is cathode
biased with no negative feedback. This
is a characteristic of many classic,
vintage ampliîers.
The Astoria Classic combines a 100%
hand wired signal path with modern
Power Reduction. To achieve this
innovative marriage of authentic tonal
character and contemporary switching
capability the Astoria Classic uses
turrets mounted on the PCB â allowing
the hand wiring and the more complex
switching circuitry to elegantly co-exist
on a single board.
The Sensitivity control adjusts negative
feedback in the preamp, and the Edge
control determines how bright or dark
the ampliîer sounds overall. To further
enhance your tonal palette, the front
panel Power Reduction pull switch drops
output power from 30 Watts to 5 Watts,
producing warmer, softer tones.
The Astoria Classic will appeal to purists
who want authentic clean all-valve
tone, and to boutique pedal enthusiasts
who will înd it the perfect pure-valve
foundation for their sound.
The Astoria Classic combo features a
12â custom-voiced Celestion Creamback
speaker, as does the optional AST1-112
speaker cabinet, which is designed to
match either the AST1H head, or the
AST1C combo as an extension speaker
cabinet.
INTRODUCTION
OVERVIEW
FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND HEED ALL WARNINGS
KEEP THESE INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING:
Before going any further, make sure that
your ampliîer is compatible with your
mains electricity supply. If you have any
doubt, please seek help from a qualiîed
technician â your Marshall dealer can
help you in this respect.
MAINS INPUT & FUSE:
The speciîc mains input voltage
rating that your ampliîer has been
manufactured for is indicated on the
rear panel of the ampliîer.
Your ampliîer is provided with a
detachable mains (power) lead, which
should be connected to the MAINS
INPUT socket on the rear panel of the
ampliîer.
The correct value and type of mains
fuse is speciîed on the rear panel of the
ampliîer.
NEVER attempt to bypass the fuse or ît
one of the incorrect value or type.
TRANSPORTING YOUR EQUIPMENT:
Please ensure that your ampliîer is
switched off, unplugged from the mains
electricity supply and all removable
cables have been disconnected from
your equipment before attempting to
move it.
IMPORTANT SET UP INFORMATION:
1. Make sure that the speaker or
speaker cabinet(s) is connected to
the correct impedance loudspeaker
jack socket(s) on the rear panel of
the ampliîer. See the
LOUDSPEAKERS guide in this
manual (Rear Panel Functions #3)
for speciîc information regarding
impedance matching. When using a
speaker cabinet(s) make sure that
you use a proper speaker cable.
Never use a screened (shielded)
guitar cable for this purpose.
NOTE: Before connecting or
disconnecting speakers you MUST
switch the ampliîer off and
disconnect it from the mains
electricity supply. Switching on
without a speaker or speaker
cabinet(s) plugged in will damage the
ampliîer.
2. Ensure that the MASTER volume
control on the front panel is set to
zero (Front Panel Function #2).
3. Connect the supplied mains (power)
lead into the MAINS INPUT on the
rear panel îrst and then into the
mains electricity supply. (Rear Panel
Function #1)
4. Plug your guitar into either the HI or
LO input jack socket on the front
panel (Front Panel Function #1).
5. Turn the front panel power switch
ON (Front Panel Function #10) and
wait for a few minutes before going
to point #6 below.
6. After waiting, engage the STANDBY
switch (Front Panel Function #9).
7. Turn the MASTER volume up to your
preferred level and your amp is ready
to play.
WARNING! IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1. HI & LO INPUTS
HI & LO input jack sockets are a feature
found on most classic ampliîers.
They ensure maximum îexibility with
different pickup types, conîgurations
and, of course, personal tonal
preference.
2. MASTER
This controls the overall volume of the
ampliîer.
The PULL POWER REDUCTION
function drops the ampliîerâs output
power from 30 Watts to 5 Watts when
activated.
Tonal Note 1: The PULL POWER
REDUCTION function results in a
slightly warmer, less âin your faceâ sound.
The switch is located with the MASTER
control because it is a power stage
function. When power is dropped tonal
integrity is maintained.
Tonal Note 2: The drop in volume will
vary depending on the level of the
MASTER volume â the higher the
MASTER volume level, the less the
perceived volume drop will be.

3. SENSITIVITY
This control optimises the sensitivity of
the preamp by controlling its negative
feedback. By doing so it increases or
decreases the gain without changing the
output impedance of the îrst stage. This
means that tonal integrity is
preserved regardless of where the
SENSITIVITY control level is set.
4. TREBLE
This controls the level of higher
frequencies.
5. MIDDLE
This controls the level of middle range
frequencies.
6. BASS
This controls the level of lower
frequencies.
7. EDGE
Unlike BASS, MIDDLE and TREBLE,
which are preamp functions, EDGE is
a power stage function. This means
that it makes the overall characteristic
sound of the ampliîer brighter or darker,
depending where you set it.
Tonal Note 1: The EDGE control cuts
high frequencies between the phase
splitter and the power valves. This
has a function similar to a traditional
âpresenceâ control. Most âpresenceâ
